LTC James Mosteller graduated from Appalachian State University in 1989 as a Distinguished Military Graduate in the ROTC program and received a Regular Commission. After completing the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course and the US Army Ranger School, LTC Mosteller served as a Company Fire Support Officer and then as a Battery Fire Direction Officer for the 1-320th FA assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Ft. Campbell, KY. LTC Mosteller deployed with the 101st during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm where he participated in the largest air assault operation in history. He went on to serve with the 1-320th FA as a recon/survey officer, a battery executive officer, and finally as a Battalion Maintenance Officer.
As a detail branch officer, LTC Mosteller completed the Military Intelligence Officer Transition Course and Military Intelligence Officer Advance Course at Ft. Huachuaca, AZ. After completion of his intelligence training, LTC Mosteller was assigned as the Brigade S2 for HHC, 3rd BDE, 24th ID at Ft. Benning, GA. and again deployed to the Gulf region for Operation Vigilant Warrior in 1994. LTC Mosteller was then assigned as an instructor at the US Army Infantry School in Ft. Benning, GA, before leaving active duty in 1997.
LTC Mosteller joined the North Carolina Army National Guard in 1998 as a Battalion Fire Direction Officer for the 1-113th FA. He subsequently entered the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) program in 1998 and served five years with the 1-113th FA as the Battalion Administrative Officer. During his time with the 1-113th FA, he served as a Battery Commander, Brigade Fire Support Officer and Battalion S3. In 2003, LTC Mosteller was selected to attend the Command and General Staff Officers College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS. After returning to the State of North Carolina, he served as Secretary to the General Staff at JFHQ-NC and as the Director of Operations and Military Support.
In 2005, LTC Mosteller assumed command of 1-113th FA, a 535 man PALADIN Battalion in the North Carolina National Guard. Most recently, he was a Task Force Commander for a 360 man task force that deployed to the city of New Orleans in support of Operation Hurricane Katrina Relief.
In 2009, LTC Mosteller deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 30th Heavy Brigade, North Carolina National Guard. He served as the Brigade Operations officer for a 4,200 man Developed and executed over 75 combat operations utilizing lethal and non-lethal means to eliminate anti-Iraqi insurgents. LTC Mosteller retired from active duty in July 2010 and has served as the Senior Army Instructor at Mallard creek High School since Aug 2010.
His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal w/ 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, Southwest Asia Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (K and SA), Humanitarian Award, Louisiana Cross for Merit, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab, and Army Superior Unit Award. He has received two combat unit patches with the 101st Airborne and 30th.
Colonel is the Senior Army Instructor at Mallard Creek and instructs the LET 3 and 4 classes.
