First Sergeant Brian Edwards is a native of Smithfield, Virginia. He received his formal education and graduated from Smithfield High School. He joined the United States Army as a small arms repairer in July 1986. His first assignment was the first armored division in Germany, where he served as a small arms/ artillery repairer. First Sergeant Edwards deployed to Southwest Asia in support of operation desert shield and desert storm. He later changed his Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) to 79R Recruiter.
First Sergeant Edwards was the distinguished honor graduate at the United States Army Recruiting School. He began his recruiting career in Wilmington, NC as a field recruiter. While serving as a field recruiter, First Sergeant Edwards earned the recruiting gold badge, 3 gold recruiting stars, 3 sapphire stars, the recruiting ring, the Glen E. Morrell medallion and the medallion ring. First Sergeant Edwards later served as an on-production station commander, a limited production station commander, guidance counselor, recruiter trainer, first sergeant and senior guidance counselor. He retired from active duty in 2008 after serving 22 years. He served in various assignments in the US and abroad, and achieved a number of awards and decorations. He currently serves in his community as a JROTC Instructor at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, North Carolina.
First Sergeant Edwards is married to his lovely wife Valerie and have been together for 26 years. Together, they have two beautiful children, Amber 22 and Brian II 15.
First Sergeant Edwards' awards and decorations include: 4 Meritorious Service medals, 5 Army Commendation medals, 3 Army Achievement medals, 2 National Defense Ribbons, 1 Southwest Asia Service medals with a bronze star, Global War on Terrorism Service medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, 7 Army Good Conduct Medals, Non-Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon and the Military Service Ribbons.
He is the LET 1 Army Instructor. He is the head Instructor over the Rifle team.
